Watermelon Sorbet recipe and image by Lacey Stevens-Baier, A Sweet Pea chef

This watermelon sorbet is just lovely.  I was quite suprised in how vibrant flavor was since many times flavors can get muted when using natural ingredients, but this recipe didn’t disappoint.  What beautiful color! This recipe is really easy to make and turned out simple and delicious.  Perfect way to end the summer!  This sorbet is everything you  could have ever hoped for!

recipe adapted from the Culinary Philosopher

1¼ cup sugar
1¼ water ***
6-7 cups fresh seedless watermelon chunks (about half of the melon)
3 tbsp. fresh lime juice (approximately 3 1/2 medium-sized limes)

***optional substitution: replace water with your favorite rum for an amazing adult treat

In a medium saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved (do not stir). Place in a bowl to completely cool.

Put the watermelon chunks and the lime into a blender or food processor. Pulse about 20 times to chop the melon and then process until the watermelon is completely pureed. Press the watermelon through a fine mesh strainer to remove the seeds and any extra pulp. Combine with the cooled sugar syrup. Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Pour the watermelon mixture into the freezer bowl of your ice cream maker (I recommend the Cuisinart Automatic Frozen Yogurt Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker). Mix until the sorbet has thickened, approximately 25-35 minutes.  The sorbet will have soft serve texture. You can enjoy right away or put the sorbet into an airtight container and place in the freezer until firm for about 2 hours.

DIY Ideas: Flowered Chic Shower Cap | The Natural Socialite

In DIY, Fashion on September 29, 2011 at 9:30 am

For those of you who don’t know me personally, I will admit that I can be a little “extra”…. lol.  That’s even more reason for me to create my very own custom shower cap that will be heavily inspired by these pics:

Yes.  I am so serious.  I love the mix of feminine & vintage flavor of the flowers in the inspirational pics I found. Once I gather enough faux flowers together, this masterpiece will be all mine. Lol.  Don’t hate.  I know you want one too… lol

Best Bath Ever! The Pain Reliever | The Natural Socialite

In Culture & Lifestyle, Products on September 29, 2011 at 9:15 am

I recently joined a brutal  daily fitness boot camp here in Chicago thanks to a fantastic deal from Dealster, and immediately jumped at the chance to dive “feet first” back into my workout plan for only $19 (reg $99). The only problem with that is that I have not been active on this level in 11-12 years, and my body quickly reminded me that I am not in the shape I used to be.  Extreme pain can only begin to explain what I was dealing with after only 2 days of classes, so I had to come up with a plan fast to relieve some of this stiffness and take away these aches & pains…. And I am pleased to present to you the BEST.BATH.EVER.

Check me out….

Hot Water, Epsom Salt (Walmart- $2.09), Green Alcohol (Walmart -$.99), Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap  in Peppermint (Target-$14.57), Shea Moisture Lemongrass & Ginger Scrub (Target-$9.99) & my trusty Mr. Pumice (Sally’s-$2.49)

This is where the magic happened... lol

The original goal of this bath was to relieve my muscle tension & aches, but quickly turned into a personal pamper session ;0) I ended up soaking in this wonderful concoction (Epsom Salt, Green Alcohol & Dr. Bronner’s) for over an hour (yes, the water was STILL hot! lol), and after treating my feet to a faux pedi & an after bath shower I was feeling like new money!  I’,m trying to get away from taking commercial drugs (i.e. Tylenol, etc) all together, and this remedy was just what the Dr. (Grandma Wilks) ordered! The Epsom Salt & green alcohol bath was something my lovely grandmother used to treat me to when I was sick as a child and I always felt 100x’s better & slept like a baby.  This time was no different… lol.  I am now back to biz & ready to start week two of my 4 week boot camp!

What are some of your relaxation & after workout remedies?

Smooth 4a/4b Edges with Murray’s Pomade (pics & video) | Natural Socialite

In Product Reviews, YouTube Videos on September 28, 2011 at 9:30 am

Greetings All!! I just wanted to show you guys how I use Murray’s pomade to smooth my edges that absolutely refuse to cooperate with gels and other edge control products. Sometimes you just have to take it back to the old school methods to finally find what you are looking for.  I picked up this Murray’s pomade from Walgreen’s about a week or so ago, and so far it has worked fairly well.  My search for edge control products is not up just yet, but  this will definitely stay in the arsenal until I find that ultimate product.

The price point of Murray’s pomade is very inexpensive at around $2.99 per container.  My main gripe with this product is that it contains both mineral oil & petroleum, but it works so…..yeah, I’m using it.

If you guys have any other suggestions for products that help smooth 4a/4b natural hair, please let me know ;0)  Until then, check out the YouTube video on how I’ve been using this product.

Is a Natural Hair “Sorority” Necessary? | The Natural Socialite

In Culture & Lifestyle on September 21, 2011 at 9:41 am

The group Pi Nappa Kappa was founded earlier this year by Leola Anifowoshe, the self-proclaimed authority on natural haircare, for women of “African descent.”

Anifowoshe’s vision for Pi Nappa Kappa (“Nappa,” of course, isn’t a letter in the Greek alphabet, but an allusion to “natural” or “nappy” hair) is to serve as a group and space where natural hair enthusiasts can voice their concerns, share their stories and support each other towards a healthier lifestyle. The sorority operates under the Natural Healthy Hair Society, which is also run by Anifowoshe.

“It’s about sisterhood, that’s why I call it a sorority,” Anifowoshe told HuffPost BlackVoices.

Nearly 600 women have already pledged the sorority, but Anifowoshe’s goal is to have 10,000 members by the end of the year. There is no hazing or any formal ceremonies involved in the intake process. All that’s required is an electronic signature on the organization’s pledge document.

The pledge states:

As a member of the Pi Nappa Kappa Natural Hair Sorority, I pledge that:1. I am a smart, special, valuable person!
2. I respect myself and I respect others.
3. My words and actions are kind and honest.
4. I will respect the dignity and essential worth of all individuals.
5.I will promote the diversity of opinions, ideas, hairstyles and backgrounds which is the lifeblood of the sorority.
6. I will promote a culture of respect throughout the natural hair community.
7. I will not tolerate bigotry, discrimination, violence, or intimidation of any kind.
8. I will practice personal integrity and expect it from others.
9. I will always be proud of my natural born hair.
10. I accept only my best in all I do.

I am PROUD to be ME!

Some members of real historically black sororities have voiced their distain for the organization’s use of the word “sorority” and what the group stands for.One representative commenter on a YouTube video addressing the need for a natural-hair sorority wrote: “As a member of a real sorority, I do not feel this is necessary. Here’s why. Traditional African American fraternities and sororities were founded, [because] we could not belong to white [organizations]. However, we accept anybody regardless of HAIR TYPE! So, is there a need? NO! [This] sends a message that if you have natural hair, that you don’t belong … not true!”

What do you think about a Natural Hair Sorority? Will you be joining Pi Nappa Kappa?

Versace Hits H&M Stores This Fall! | The Natural Socialite

In Fashion on September 20, 2011 at 11:52 am

Donatella Versace & Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H

Fashion Maven Donatella Versace has done it again. H&M has announced that its Fall 2011 collection will be inspired by their recent collaboration with my darling Donatella and will hit limited U.S. stores November 19th. The exclusive collection will recall the vibrant heritage of the brand, complete with leather, prints, color, and exuberance in exclusive materials at fantastic H&M prices. The collection will include lines for both women and men and selected pieces for the home.

“I am thrilled to be collaborating with H&M and to have the opportunity of reaching their wide audience. The collection will be quintessential Versace, perfect for H&M and Versace fans everywhere,” says Donatella Versace.

“Versace is one of the most important brands of recent times and their collection for H&M will be glamorous and extraordinary – everything Versace stands for. Versace is sharing with us iconic designs from the archives. This is such a celebratory collaboration and is perfect for the festive season,” says Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M.

The 40-piece womenswear collection will feature studded leather, silk and colorful print, with accessories including high heels and costume jewellery. The 20-piece men’s collection will feature sharp tailoring, including the perfect tuxedo, as well as belts and jewellery for men too.  And as revealed early this year, for the first time in a designer collaboration at H&M, the collection will also consist of some homeware pieces!

This collection will be a sell out for sure…. I will definitely be at H&M on launch day!

Virgin Sangria Recipe | The Natural Socialite

In Recipes on September 20, 2011 at 10:26 am

Recipe and images of Virgin Sangria by Lacey Stevens-Baier, a sweet pea chef

Everytime my family has a get together, we make sure we first start the party off with a glass of fresh sangria.  While our traditional version is typically made with a bottle of red or white wine, this refreshing beverage is non-alcoholic & can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Recipe and images of Virgin Sangria by Lacey Stevens-Baier, a sweet pea chef

The hardest part about making this recipe is letting it sit in the fridge for the alloted time.  While this beverage is best after sitting in the fridge overnight, I would suggest allowing it to sit and marinate for at least 3 hours. Feel free to improvise with whatever fruit or juices you may have on hand. For example, you could add some cranberry juice, pomegranate juice, sliced peaches, sliced pineapples, etc. to make it your own.

Recipe and images of Virgin Sangria by Lacey Stevens-Baier, a sweet pea chef

Adapted from Sweet Pea Chef

Here’s what you will need:

Virgin Sangria

3 cups grape juice
3/4 cup apple juice
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1 lemon, thinly sliced, with peel
1/2 lime, thinly sliced, with peel
1 medium orange, thinly sliced, with peel
1 small apple, cored, sliced into 8ths, with peel
1 small black plum, thinly sliced, with peel
2-3 cups ginger ale or club soda, to taste

Combine the fruits and juices in a large pitcher. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, overnight preferably, to allow for flavors to combine. Prior to serving, add ginger ale and stir together.
